This 4-day / 3-night birdwatching tour combines two spectacular worlds: the channels, lakes, and reedbeds of the Danube Delta with the unique area of Letea — a traditional village, Letea Forest, sand dunes, salt marshes, steppe birds, and semi-wild horses observed in the warm light of sunset.

This tour is designed for birdwatching enthusiasts, nature lovers, bird observers, and photographers who are not looking for mass tourism, but for an authentic, slow, ethical, and meaningful experience.

The main focus of this programme is birdwatching: identification, behaviour, habitats, seasonality, and understanding the wildlife of the Danube Delta. At the same time, participants who wish to do so can also take wildlife photographs, landscape images, habitat shots, and atmospheric images, without the tour becoming a strictly photography-focused trip.

Optionally, participants may bring a drone, but its use is possible only where the law, local regulations, and field conditions allow it. Drone use must not disturb birds or wildlife, must avoid colonies, nests, or sensitive species, and must always follow an ethical approach to nature.

Local Guiding, Real Experience, and Ethical Birdwatching

The tour is led by Florin Stavarache — local guide, ornithologist, biologist, and wildlife photographer, with more than 20 years of field experience in the Danube Delta, Dobrogea, and other wild areas of Romania.

Florin grew up close to these places and knows the Delta not only as a tourist destination, but as a living, changing world where light, wind, water levels, and bird behaviour decide each day.

During this tour, we do not chase species and we do not force encounters with wildlife. We read nature, wait for the right moment, and observe what the Delta offers us naturally.

What You May Observe

In the Danube Delta

The birdwatching sessions in the Danube Delta take place mainly from the low-profile boat, along channels, lakes, reedbeds, colonies observed from a respectful distance, quiet banks, and areas where bird activity is influenced by light, wind, and water levels.

Possible species include:

• Dalmatian Pelican and Great White Pelican
• Squacco Heron, Night Heron, Purple Heron, Grey Heron, and Little Bittern
• Egrets, Pygmy Cormorant, Glossy Ibis, and Spoonbill
• Kingfisher, terns, gulls, and waders
• White-tailed Eagle and other birds of prey
• Bearded Reedling, Reed Bunting, reed warblers, and other reedbed birds
• Occasionally: Otter, Wildcat, Raccoon Dog, Wild Boar, or Muskrat

We move slowly and discreetly, with the engine turned off whenever possible, in order to preserve the silence of the place and observe birds without putting pressure on them.

The goal is not only to collect species on a list, but to understand the Delta: how birds feed, how they use different habitats, and how their activity changes according to light, wind, season, and water levels.

For those who wish to photograph, there may be excellent opportunities for portraits, birds in flight, habitat shots, reflections on the water, natural behaviour, and moments that cannot be repeated.

In the Letea Area

Letea adds a completely different dimension to this tour. Here, the Delta changes: sand dunes appear, along with salt marshes, open areas, the traditional village, and one of the most spectacular strictly protected forests in Romania.

On the route to Letea and in the salt marsh areas, we will look for and observe species such as:

• Collared Pratincole
• Kentish Plover
• Avocet
• Black-winged Stilt
• Sandpipers, stints, shorebirds, and other waders
• Red-footed Falcon
• Bee-eaters, Hoopoes, and Rollers
• Red-backed Shrike and Lesser Grey Shrike
• Birds of prey using the open areas for hunting

In spring and early summer, the salt marsh area is extremely interesting, with temporary pools, sandy areas, and perfect habitats for birds that are migrating, feeding, or nesting.

In the Letea area, transfers are made by local safari vehicle, allowing us to cover several habitats and observe wildlife without disturbing it.

Letea Forest, the Traditional Village, and Semi-Wild Horses

After the morning session, we will explore Letea Forest, a strictly protected area famous for its ancient oak trees, sand dunes, and rare vegetation.

Here, we may observe and photograph:

• Old oak trees
• Sand dunes
• Dobrogea liana
• Sand bindweed
• Orchids, especially in April and May
• Habitat details and the atmosphere of an old forest

We will also discover the life of the traditional village of Letea: houses made of clay, wood, and reed, sandy streets, old fences, domestic animals, and the atmosphere of a place that still preserves the old rhythm of the Delta.

In the evening, at sunset, we will have one of the most special experiences of the tour: observing and, optionally, photographing the semi-wild horses of Letea in warm light.

It is one of those moments when you are not just looking at an animal, but at an atmosphere: fine dust, low light, silhouettes, movement, and freedom.

The Rhythm of the Tour

Each day is built around light, weather, and bird behaviour.

In general, the programme includes:

• an early morning birdwatching session, when birds are most active
• a break for meals, rest, and discussions about the species observed
• an afternoon / evening birdwatching session, in the warm light of sunset

In the Danube Delta, we work mainly from the low-profile boat.
In Letea, we use a local safari vehicle and, where suitable, observation from a distance or from discreet points.

Between sessions, we can discuss species identification, bird behaviour, seasonality, habitats, migration, wildlife photography, composition, light, and how to build a stronger visual story rather than just isolated images.

Short Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Tulcea and Transfer into the Danube Delta

Meeting in Tulcea Harbour, on the “Ivan Patzaichin” Promenade, at 16:00.

We start by boat towards the central part of the Danube Delta, usually towards the Mila 23 / Maliuc area, depending on accommodation and availability.

Even on the first day, the transfer becomes a birdwatching session. Along the route, we may see herons, pelicans, gulls, cormorants, birds of prey, Kingfishers, and the first images of the Delta: narrow channels, reedbeds, willows, reflections, and warm evening light.

In the evening: check-in, dinner, and briefing for the following days.

Day 2 – Birdwatching in the Heart of the Danube Delta

This day is dedicated to birdwatching in the heart of the Danube Delta.

We will start early, before the day becomes too hot, in order to be in the field when birds are active and the light is good. The route will be adapted according to weather, light, wind, water levels, and bird activity.

We will explore channels, lakes, reedbeds, quiet banks, and less visited areas, looking for natural behaviour: feeding, flight, interactions between species, reedbed birds singing, raptors patrolling above the Delta, and groups of pelicans or cormorants.

After dinner, we can optionally have discussions about the species observed, identification, habitats, photographs taken during the day, camera settings, composition, and field techniques.

Day 3 – Letea: Salt Marshes, Forest, Sand Dunes, Traditional Village, and Semi-Wild Horses

Day 3 is dedicated to the Letea area, one of the most different and spectacular parts of the Danube Delta.

We will travel by boat towards Letea, continuing birdwatching along the route. The journey itself can offer very good observations, depending on the season, weather, and bird activity.

In the Letea area, we will explore the salt marshes, sandy areas, and open habitats, where we may observe waders, Collared Pratincole, Avocet, Black-winged Stilt, Kentish Plover, Red-footed Falcons, Bee-eaters, Hoopoes, Rollers, and other species typical of open habitats.

We will visit Letea Forest, with its ancient oak trees, sand dunes, and rare vegetation, then discover the traditional village and the authentic atmosphere of the place.

The evening is reserved for one of the most special experiences of the tour: observing the semi-wild horses in the warm light of sunset. For those who photograph, this can be one of the most beautiful moments of the programme.

Accommodation and meals will be in the village, with traditional local food.

Day 4 – Final Birdwatching Session and Return to Tulcea

In the morning, we will have the final birdwatching session on the way back to Tulcea.

Sometimes, the most beautiful encounters happen exactly when you think the tour is almost over, so binoculars and cameras should remain ready until the end.

Depending on the route and field conditions, we may have final observations of pelicans, herons, egrets, cormorants, White-tailed Eagles, terns, gulls, Kingfishers, or other species found along the channels and lakes.

The tour ends around midday in Tulcea.
